L’ente umanitario ebraico American Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), nel 1935 incarica un fotografo di documentare la vita nelle città e nei ghetti delle famiglie ebree. Il fotografo si chiamava Roman Vishniac e ancora non sapeva di essere sul punto di fermare sulla sua pellicola istanti appartenenti al mondo dello schtetl polacco alla vigilia della sua eclissi e del macello dell’Olocausto. Le sue immagini guardano dritto negli occhi, raccontano storie, evocano momenti di vita quotidiana e soprattutto emozionano.
Vishniac lavorò principalmente con due macchine fotografiche, una Rolleiflex e una Leica, e raccolse moltissime immagini; un corposo estratto è contenuto nel libro "A Vanished World" (Un Mondo Scomparso).
